"Should I be a copywriter" is the wrong question

I saw something yesterday that I just had to say something about.

Because it’s a dangerous idea that’s been thrown around for far too long.

And I also think regardless of what skill you want to develop…

Whether it’s copywriting…

Or anything else…

For money or not…

You need to ask better questions.

It’s not “can I make it as a copywriter?”

Because the answer is yes.

Copywriters be copywriting and getting paid out here.

The question is, do you want to be a copywriter?

Because I don’t know many people who truly want to, frankly.

And secondly… are you willing to do what it takes?

Because most people aren’t.

If a market exists for something then you can make money doing it.

Markets always change and fluctuate and you’ll always have to ride that wave regardless of what you do.

So people are asking the wrong questions…

They’re asking questions out of interest and not commitment.

Well, you sure as heck won’t make it as a copywriter (or anything else) if you’re simply interested and not committed.

But here’s what I saw in an email yesterday that drives me a bit batty…

Only because it’s not a new idea…

And every new wave of “fresh meat” gets brainwashed with this…

Like I did a few years ago.

“There are still 330 MILLION businesses in the world, and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them need a copywriter.”

Mmmm… no.

Nope, nope, nope.

You’re lucky if 10% of those businesses have any idea what copywriting is…

And writing sales copy is a very specific skill.

A lot of businesses don’t actually use much copywriting in their marketing.

A lot of these businesses are local businesses who do all the marketing themselves…

And you’re lucky if they have even $500 in their budget to hire somebody.

Trying to sell to somebody who:

  1. Has no budget

  2. Doesn’t know or value copywriting

Well that’s gonna be a hoot!

Send videos and I’ll fire up the popcorn.

No clients for you until you find high quality prospects.

May the odds be ever in your favor!
